Ambassador Wayne Discusses Security, Economy and Education With the Governor of Nuevo Leon, Rodrigo Medina de la Cruz

Monterrey, NL Wednesday July 2, 2014 — While in Monterrey today, Ambassador Wayne had a productive conversation with the Governor of Nuevo León, Rodrigo Medina de la Cruz, and his security advisers, economic and educational initiatives, U.S. cooperation with the state, and a variety of other topics of mutual interest. Ambassador Wayne thanked the Governor for his support in moving the Consulate and its commitment to provide security resources for facilities and staff of the diplomatic compound.

Ambassador Wayne and Medina Governor spoke for some time about the improved security situation in Monterrey, and successful tactics that the state of Nuevo León has been used to reduce homicides and return a status of relative calm. They also talked about numerous reforms being debated in the federal legislature and how they might affect issues such as new investment, the competitiveness of local businesses, and the race of 2015. Governor and his team briefed the Ambassador and the Consul General Pomper about his vision of the role Nuevo Leon can play in the production chain of the energy sector in the future. They also discussed the continued U.S. investment in the state and the new educational relationships that are developing between Nuevo Leon and Texas. The Ambassador expressed his support for these projects.

Ambassador Wayne also congratulated Governor Medina and Nuevo León for his role as a pioneer and champion in the field of security and justice reforms. The Ambassador recalled that Nuevo Leon is the first state to implement drug treatment courts now been extended to Morelos and will soon be in other states. Ambassador Wayne and Governor Medina spoke about upcoming meetings in Nuevo Leon with the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System (SESNSP), noting that this will allow the United States and Mexico to advance even further in the state of Mérida Initiative programs and trainings in Nuevo León. Governor Medina offered his congratulations on the inauguration of the new building of the Consulate in Monterrey and its commitment to continue close cooperation.
