Supporting Monarch Butterfly on Earth Day, Launch of Green Race 2015

Monterrey, NL .-The US Consulate General in Monterrey celebrated World Earth Day today at its facilities located in Santa Catarina with an activity in which representatives of the Consulate, Pronatura, members of the Youth Council of the Consulate and American College Students (ASFM), planted 400 plants hosting by the monarch butterflies in the diplomatic compound.

The United States, Mexico and Canada share many ecosystems and species including the history and migration of the monarch butterfly. The three countries have expressed for the conservation and protection of this species. The life of the monarch butterfly begins at one of the plants on the consulate where the eggs are laid. Later, as an adult, migration begins in August. A Mexico was admitted in September and October through the states of Coahuila, Nuevo Leon, Tamaulipas, Zacatecas, Querétaro, Aguascalientes, Guanajuato, San Luis Potosí, Hidalgo, State of Mexico and Michoacan.

During the celebration of Earth Day, Joseph Pomper , Consul General of the US in Monterrey, said: «The annual migration of monarch butterflies across North America is one of the most impressive spectacles of nature, and Monterrey is located right in his path. Unfortunately, in recent years, human activity has threatened natural habitats of butterflies. Our contribution today shows that everyone can play a significant role in maintaining their livelihoods. »

This is in addition to existing environmental friendly scenario in diplomatic facilities like gardens with its own flora of the region, the tapestry of local stones, mixing regional pasture with vegetation cover, inter-planted with shrubs region and trees adapted the slope of the Sierra Madre Oriental, which have been used to minimize water usage and maintenance required.

In this activity the Consul General Pomper was accompanied by Magdalena Rovalo Biologist, General Director of Pronatura Noreste.

The Consulate and Pronatura Noreste advantage to officially open the record for Carrera Green Race 2015, which on Sunday September 20 will be held in San Pedro Garza Garcia. The Green Race is a race 10k and 3k organized each year by the US Consulate in Monterrey and Pronatura Noreste, and also offers an environmental festival. This will be the seventh edition, where you try to raise awareness on environmental issues. Each year we have planted five trees per broker in the region. The theme for 2015 is «Save your breath. Plant a tree. »

During April Photo Contest was also performed «The image of the Green Race» where the best three pictures that represented the theme «what it means to you to be green» sent to our social networks, won free records to the Green Race 2015. The winners are:

  • Javier Lozano H. – 1st Place won 2 registers to the Green Race 2015

 

  • Rosalba Vergara – 1 record won 2nd place at the Green Race 2015

 

  • Javier Zapata – 3rd Place 1 record won the Green Race 2015
